DVD Pick: “Let the Right One In” (2008)

In the 1980s, America’s mainstream horror cinemascape was overrun with paint-by-numbers slasher flicks.  This decade that void seems to have been filled with equally vacuous, and more morally disturbing, torture porn.  Few movies have made me hate going to the theater more than Hostel or the Saw series.

Now America’s female attention seems to be focused on Twilight, and its’ lame-ass, skin-glowin’ “vampires”.  Fortunately, last year Sweden did their best to reclaim the horror and vampire genres from our apparently retarded American directors.  Let the Right One In was one of the best films released in 2008, and I sincerely believe it will someday join The Shining as a true horror classic.

  1. One of my friends recommended not buying, renting, or streaming the US release. Apparently it has subtitles that would make a comp lit department spontaneously combust.

Here’s a link to a scene-by-scene comparison between the English subtitles on the US release and the English subtitles on the screener: http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html

Hmm…I guess I’m so used to piss pour English translations of foreign movies (they seem especially incapable of translating Scandinavian films), that I didn’t notice too much (I may have also been drunk). Yeah, some of the dialogue was obviously a bit stilted, but I felt the story still came across. And the visuals are wonderful. But shit…now I’m really disappointed.

  2. My neighbor was telling me the other day that, in response to complaints over the English subs, the distributor is re-releasing the DVD with the “Original English Subtitles.”
