Chase Jackson’s Top 25 Albums of 2008, Pt. 1

Here is the first in what we hope will be a series of end of the year guest lists.  This one comes from Chase Jackson, talented soul responsible for the Silence in Architecture-approved Death Knelly.  There are already a few best-of-’08 lists floating out there in cyberspace, but this is probably the best I’ve seen so far.

Be sure to check out Death Knelly’s air-tight, fly-as-a-kite cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Over and Over“.

Editor’s Note: The picks are by Chase…the extra videos were chosen by me, so keep in mind they don’t necessarily reflect Mr. Jackson’s favorite songs off of the accompanying album.

“Your Arms Around Me” Jens Lekman
“Flume” Bon Iver
“Shabop Shalom” Devendra Banhart

Favorite New Band or Older Band You Recently Discovered:
Colourmusic
The Gallus Brothers

Favorite Song Ever:
Geez. Umm. “King of Carrot Flowers” (both parts) Neutral Milk Hotel?

Best Recent Concert:
British Sea Power.
By the by, they’re going to be one of the headliners for the Norman Music Festival later this month…

Last Great Film I Saw:
I finally got to see “The Darjeeling Limited” the other day. Well worth the wait.

Last Great Book I Read:
“The Dharma Bums,” by Jack Kerouac. I don’t know what it is about Kerouac. I love his stuff, but it’s such a task to read. This one took me three tries to finish.

First Album You Remember Buying:
U2’s “Joshua Tree.” Traded it from a kid in exchange for a Stacy Q cassette I got from my parents.

Favorite Band to Hate On That All Your Friends Heart:
Oh, how I wish the light would fade from those Bright Eyes.

Best Purchase of the Last Year:
Bamboo plants. I planted three of them outside last year, and I’m told after a year or two they spread like wildfire. Hopefully within five years southeast Ada will be compared to southeast Asia. The cats will love it.

Best Thing I Did This Year:
Spent a week in Washington. It was incredible.

Favorite Recent Drunk Moment:
The post-Red Cross drunkfest at the Elks last weekend. Will, you’re a beautiful man.

Favorite TV Show at the Moment:
Lost is first on my list. Rescue Me is up there too, but I have to watch that a season at a time.

Favorite Video Game at the Moment:
Warcraft’s been keeping me busy again lately. But it’s getting tedious already.

Most Commonly Eaten Food Product:
Hummus and toasted pita bread. AKA “mana.”

My Ringtone:
Vibrate. Ringtones bug me.

Friendly Lists: Chase Jackson

Favorite Songs of the Past Year: Crystal Castles remix of “Crimewave” by Health has been one of my favorite songs to dance to. Their remixes are sick! Another great remix that I am absolutely in love with is Ratatat’s remix of Bjork’s “Wanderlust”. I’ve been listening to Beach House’s new album Devotion constantly. My favorite track off of that is “Turtle Island”. Other songs I really enjoyed from the past year are M.I.A – “$20”, Radiohead – “Nude”, Chromatics – “I Want Your Love”, and Studio – “West Side”

Favorite New Band or Older Band You Recently Discovered: I’ve been getting into the debut lp by Fuck Buttons. It’s like this joyous clusterfuck of opposing genres battling it out. It’s quite a captivating listening experience. I also really like High Places. They have an exciting playfulness about them that I’m digging.

Favorite Song Ever: This is such a hard question, whose answer changes weekly, if not daily. Right now I’d have to say “Shadow of a Doubt” by Sonic Youth or “End of the Line” by Roxy Music.

Best Recent Concert: Crystal Castles @ Hailey’s in Denton, Texas. Strobe lights, heavy breathing, sweaty, crazed bodies giving themselves over to abandon. Never has dance music been so hardcore.

Last Great Film I Saw: The last film I saw in theaters was There Will Be Blood. I’ve seen it twice but I could see it 7 more times. I thought it was the best picture of last year. Every aspect of it absolutely floored me. The people that say it is a boring waste of 3 hours make my eye twitch.

Last Great Book I Read: Crackpot by John Waters. I think John Waters is one of the funniest people alive. A very enjoyable read.

First Album You Remember Buying: The Breeders – Last Splash

Favorite Band to Hate On That All Your Friends Heart: Life Without Buildings. For some reason, we just didn’t hit it off.

Best Purchase of the Last Year: I got some really nice headphones that are extremely comfortable and have yet to give me any grief.

Best Thing I Did This Year: Seeing Sonic Youth perform “Trilogy” live. When they launched into the “Eliminator Jr.” section of it, I almost lost my mind.

Favorite Recent Drunk Moment: The dance party at Nicole’s apartment after celebrating Jezy’s 21st Birthday at Cellerman’s. Good Times!!

Favorite TV Show at the Moment: The Bad Girls Club on the Oxygen network. It’s about all these 20-something women with attitude problems living under one roof. The reason it’s so great is because there is a fight almost every single week and usually when a girl gets kicked out or leaves, another comes to take their place, so the dynamic within the household is constantly changing. Highly addictive.

Favorite Video Game at the Moment: Guitar Hero III, because it features Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing”. What?!!

Most Commonly Eaten Food Product: Honey Nut Cheerios

My Ringtone: “Rolling Down The Hills” by Glass Candy

P.S. I’m also very smitten with Hercules and Love Affair. The songs with Antony Hegarty on vocals sound like Nina Simone getting down with Arthur Russell. In my top five at the end of the year, for sure.

Friendly Lists: Tasha England

Favorite Songs of the Past Year:
–Bolton Wanderer – Planningtorock
–Paper Planes – M.I.A.
–Llorando – Rebekah Del Rio

Favorite New Band or Older Band You Recently Discovered:
–I was recently smitten by The Raveonettes. I saw them open for Blonde Redhead and actually enjoyed their performance the most.

Favorite Song Ever:
–Q. Lazarus’ “Goodbye Horses”. It’s not fair how much I love this song.

Best Recent Concert:
–M.I.A. was awesome. She even crowd surfed. Justin got to touch her butt.

Last Great Film I Saw:
–I saw No Country for Old Men for the second time. What a fabulous film.

Last Great Book I Read:
–The Catcher in the Rye. It was a long time coming.

First Album You Remember Buying:
–Lisa Loeb’s Stay.

Favorite Band to Hate On That All Your Friends Heart:
–Where do I start… I guess I’ll settle on Arcade Fire.

Best Purchase of the Last Year:
–It’s a tie between 2008 Mets season tickets and a large dog carrier for Fats so I can take him on the subway.

Best Thing I Did This Year:
–Saw the Flaming Lips on New Year’s Eve.

Favorite Recent Drunk Moment:
–My friend Jess and I recently had a very long chat about traveling to foreign countries. I’m pretty low key these days.

Favorite TV Show at the Moment:
–America’s Best Dance Crew just ended this week. I fell for that show hard.

Favorite Video Game at the Moment:
–Guitar Hero/Rock Band. It depends on if I have others to play with.

Most Commonly Eaten Food Product:
–Glazed Donuts from the guy on the corner of 70th and 3rd.

My Ringtone:
–David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”

Friendly Lists: Sarah Fine

Here’s Sarah Fine’s list.  Make sure you watch the Girl Talk video.  Will Krause is in it.  Word.
Favorite Songs of the Past Year: Are we talking 2K8? Cause from 01.01.08 on, it’s been pretty nuts. For me. When things trickle down to me. List of hot shit that may or may not have been released in 2K8: When Saints Go Machine “You Should Be Someone Else (Moulinex Remix),” Estelle “American Boy (Scuola Furano Fireworks and Tears Rmx),” Bell X1 “Flame (Chicken Lips Remix),” PNAU “Embrace,” Grand National “By the Time (Mondkopf Remix),” Vitamins For You “Flesh Python (Stop Die Resuscitate Remix),” Ghosthustler “Only Me to Trust,” Feist “I Feel It All (Gonzales Remix)”
Favorite New Band or Older Band You Recently Discovered: I stopped looking back long ago. I also stopped looking peripherally. I also stopped following “bands.”
Favorite Song Ever: Feist “Intution.” It’s come to the point that I can no longer tell if the song reflects my life or I’m living my life to reflect the song. Also, it helps that I’m still not entirely sure what the lyrics are. “Piecemeal can break your home / in half”? I hope so. If Leslie Feist or Erlend Oye or whoever didn’t write that line, I call dibs.
Best Recent Concert: I saw Girl Talk in Tulsa last fall. It was really lame until I jumped up on stage with everyone and worked it.

Last Great Film I Saw: Definitely Maybe. HA! JOKES! No Country for Old Men. I really loved Atonement, too. Both were visually stunning. One super dry, one super wet. Get my drift?
Last Great Book I Read: John McPhee, Uncommon Carriers. I so marvelled at the ins and outs of transportation in the US that I brazenly pounced on a set of UPS drivers, stopped in a toll-road gas station in Kansas, to confirm everything I’d read. They confirmed it all. And were impressed that I knew so much. That or they were just pleased by my apparent alignment with them over FedEx.
First Album You Remember Buying: Probably Amy Grant, tape-style. I got Brandy’s self-titled album on CD for Christmas the year I got a CD player. The first album I bought, soon after, was Alanis Morrissette. If were a white man, I would not have been in this position. And if I were a woman [of any color] I would not have been in this position. I happen to be very lucky to be who I am.
Favorite Band to Hate On That All Your Friends Heart: The morally superior form of hatred is indifference, and I am irately, aggressively ambivalent toward everything I can’t dance to.
Best Purchase of the Last Year: This 1960s school marm dress I found on eBay. I am gonna be a hot prof.
Best Thing I Did This Year: Get accepted to grad school. Get all kinds of cash money to go to grad school. Buy school marm dress to wear in grad school.
Favorite Recent Drunk Moment: Barfed all over people on a plane, returning from a visit to grad school.
Favorite TV Show at the Moment: 30 Rock. 1) Tina Fey is my celebrity look-alike 2) She is a terrific writer. 3) One time someone called her a “cunt” and she made a 30 Rock episode about it happening to Liz Lemon. 3b) One time, someone wrote “cunt” in the snow on the back windshield of my car and I turned it around and made it a reason to love Tina Fey.
Favorite Video Game at the Moment: I haven’t bought a new game since Loco Rocos. And that was about the time I was blowing off my first attempt at applying to grad school. But damn. That game is FUNTIMES!
Most Commonly Eaten Food Product: Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bars. Or, diet Dr. Pepper. Or, beer. Or, tabbouleh.
My Ringtone: Alan Braxe “Addicted”
Question You Didn’t Ask: Oliver Sachs, the Jezebel editors, William Saletan, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Carles from Hipster Runoff.

Friendly Lists: S.

Favorite Songs of the Past Year:
“Magic” by Bruce Springsteen
“Sentence of Sorts, in Konsvinger” by Of Montreal

Favorite Older Songs of the Moment:
“One Love” by Bob Marley – I’ve been really tense lately, but I can’t listen to this song and not dance.
“A Case of You” by Joni Mitchell

Favorite New Band or Older Band You Recently Discovered:
I sort of rediscovered “Arcade Fire” this year, and fell in love with them in a whole new way. I liked them the first time around, but suddenly last spring they were the right band at the right time. They weren’t one of my favorite bands until this year, so does that count?

Favorite Song Ever:
This is always difficult for me, but I think I have to go with “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan. It’s poetry, and it never gets old.

Best Recent Concert:
The Flaming Lips on NYE was brilliant. I’m going to see Jens Lekman soon though, and I’m pretty excited about that.

Last Great Film I Saw:
I think the best film I saw this year was “There Will Be Blood.” The last great film I saw was probably “The Band’s Visit” which was simple and funny and sad and beautiful.

Last Great Book I Read:
I recently reread “Shoeless Joe” and I remembered why it is one of my favorites.

First Album You Remember Buying:
I don’t. I’m sure it was some lame Christian band. I was one of those kids. The first album that mattered was “The Joshua Tree”; it changed how I felt about music, which is why U2 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Favorite Band to Hate On That All Your Friends Heart:
This varies between friends. Some of my friends listen to “innovative” stuff that honestly just sounds like noise to me. I’m sure it’s all very hip and genius, but I’d rather listen to my Patsy Cline vinyl any day of the week.

Best Purchase of the Last Year:
My turntable, without a doubt. It makes me happy.

Best Thing I Did This Year:
I moved to Dallas. I love my new city.

Favorite Recent Drunk Moment:
Can it be someone else’s drunk moment? Because watching my friend Josh pounding the table and trying to sing “Whiskey in the Jar” was one of the best things I’ve seen in awhile.

Favorite TV Show at the Moment:
I am addicted to “LOST.” It’s really the only thing I keep up with. Also, I watch a lot of “Arrested Development” on dvd.

Favorite Video Game at the Moment:
Does The Sims count? Because I love The Sims.

Most Commonly Eaten Food Product:
Hmmm… I don’t know if there’s one thing. I eat an awful lot of mushrooms and avocados. They go on almost anything.

My Ringtone:
It’s an old telephone ring. Think of your grandma’s phone: yeah, it’s like that.
